Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni faces right‑wing split as ex‑general launches Futuro Nazionale

After a defeat in a referendum on justice reform, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni saw a modest dip in poll numbers. At the same time, former army general Roberto Vannacci left the League to create a new right‑wing movement called Futuro Nazionale, promoting traditional family values, forced deportations and opposition to LGBTQ rights. Vannacci’s party has risen to about 5.3 % in recent polls, tying with the League, and has attracted eight parliamentarians from governing parties. His departure marks the first fracture in Meloni’s four‑party coalition, which now commands roughly 41.5 % support, almost equal to the opposition’s 41.9 %.
