Italian prison police seize 20 phones at Napoli's Poggioreale and drugs in a Calabria prison
The Polizia Penitenziaria conducted a large‑scale operation at the Poggioreale prison in Napoli, confiscating 20 modern smartphones found across three wings of the facility. The union USPP highlighted the seizure as evidence of the police’s professionalism and called for additional staff and advanced detection technology to improve security inside prisons.
In a separate incident at the Rossano prison in Calabria, agents uncovered more than 700 grams of a suspected narcotic and a concealed mobile phone hidden inside a package of food, with the drugs wrapped in nut shells. The discovery, reported by the Sappe union, has triggered an investigation into the source of the package and the possibility of organized distribution among inmates. Both events underscore ongoing challenges with contraband smuggling in Italian penitentiaries.
