Prato prison officer under investigation for hospital shooting

A prison police officer is under investigation for attempted murder after firing three gunshots in the emergency room of Santo Stefano Hospital in Prato. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon following a security breach at the nearby Dogaia prison.

According to Prato Prosecutor Luca Tescaroli, a 22-year-old Moroccan man was caught attempting to throw packages containing 600 grams of hashish and two mobile phones over the prison walls. After falling during his attempt to flee, the man was taken to the hospital for medical treatment. While handcuffed on a stretcher, the detainee reportedly used a fire extinguisher to create confusion and attempted to run toward the exit.

During the pursuit, the officer discharged three shots; one struck the man in the leg, while others hit the ceiling or walls. Hospital surveillance footage is being used to determine the necessity and legality of the use of force. The shooting caused the immediate closure of the hospital's emergency area, with patients being diverted to facilities in Florence and Pistoia. The prison police union, SAPPE, has expressed full solidarity with the officer, while investigators continue to review the sequence of events.
