Sicily announces 5 million euro fund for confiscated assets and faces landscape plan disputes

The Sicilian Regional Government has announced a 5 million euro fund to repurpose assets confiscated from organized crime. Presented by Regional Assessor Nuccia Albano, the initiative allows municipalities and legal development consortia to apply for grants of up to 300,000 euros. The goal is to transform these properties into social and socio-assistential services, such as community spaces or housing. Albano noted that a further 30 million euro measure is being prepared for similar purposes.

Separately, the withdrawal of the landscape plan for the Metropolitan City of Palermo has sparked political tension. The Movimento 5 Stelle criticized Regional Assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato, claiming the decision to retract the plan followed direct intervention by President Renato Schifani.

In response to the landscape planning changes, the construction association Ance Sicilia has called for a revision of implementation rules. The association expressed concern that new regulations could impact existing authorizations, public works, and private investments across various Sicilian provinces, potentially limiting land use for schools, sports facilities, and other essential infrastructure. They are requesting a transitional period to protect ongoing projects.
