Italian progressive coalition faces internal criticism over leadership strategy

Political tensions are rising within Italy's progressive coalition, known as 'campo largo,' following criticisms from writer Francesco Piccolo. Piccolo has accused the Democratic Party (PD) and the Five Star Movement (M5S) of misleading supporters by delaying political decisions and lacking a clear strategy, describing the coalition as effectively dead before its inception.

In response to these accusations, Luca Pirondini, the Five Star Movement leader in the Senate, defended the use of primary elections. Pirondini rejected the notion of an 'imbroglio,' arguing that primaries are a courageous project necessary to engage voters and prevent the imposition of leaders chosen solely by party elites. He emphasized that the M5S remains committed to participating loyally in the political process and aims to build an alliance to defend the Constitution.
