Italian provinces approve new video surveillance projects

Provincial committees in Brindisi and Trapani have approved several new video surveillance projects aimed at enhancing urban security and crime prevention across multiple municipalities in Sicily and Puglia.

In Brindisi, the committee approved projects for Ceglie Messapica and nine other towns, including Erchie, Latiano, Mesagne, Oria, San Pietro Vernotico, San Vito dei Normanni, Torchiarolo, Torre Santa Susanna, and Villa Castelli. The plans involve installing cameras and license plate reading systems connected to the national SCNTT database to improve coordination between police forces.

In Trapani, eight municipalities—Calatafimi Segesta, Castellammare del Golfo, Favignana, Marsala, Mazara del Vallo, Partanna, Salaparuta, and Valderice—received approval for similar surveillance upgrades. These systems are intended to support investigative activities and territorial control.

Both sets of projects seek funding through the Ministry of the Interior’s urban security fund. Final resource allocation will depend on a national evaluation by the Department of Public Security, which will rank projects based on criteria such as population size and crime rates.
