Italian provinces grapple with school staffing shortages

In the province of Vercelli (Piedmont), six of the 23 school administrations lack a permanent director ahead of the 2026‑2027 school year, with five of those vacancies concentrated in the Valsesia area. The shortage, persistent for several years, forces the regional education office to appoint interim managers and raises concerns about long‑term planning for school programmes.

Meanwhile, the provincial council of Trentino Alto Adige has approved a hiring directive to fill teacher vacancies in its three vocational‑training schools for the 2026‑2027 academic year. The measure, driven by the education assessor Francesca Gerosa, will schedule a recruitment round on 30 July 2026 covering both cultural and technical‑practical teaching positions, with contracts to be signed thereafter.

Both regions highlight ongoing challenges in recruiting qualified staff for schools and the steps local authorities are taking to ensure continuity of instruction.
