Italian provinces schedule elections for new leadership

Two Italian provinces have announced dates for the renewal of their provincial councils.

In Vibo Valentia, elections for the new provincial president are scheduled for December 27, 2026. Acting president Franco Barbalace issued the decree to initiate the renewal process, aiming to ensure institutional continuity and democratic representation. The date was selected following consultations with local administrators to accommodate those who are away from the territory and returning during the Christmas holidays. Candidates must adhere to specific deadlines in early December.

In Ascoli, the provincial council elections are set for December 13. Following the Delrio law, the vote will not involve the general public but will be cast by mayors and municipal councilors from the Piceno territory. The voting weight will be proportional to the population of each municipality. This election follows recent legislative reforms that extended provincial council mandates to four years to align them with presidential terms, though the current cycle in Ascoli will be adjusted to match the existing presidential mandate expiration.
