Italian provincial officials cite budget cuts for road maintenance
Provincial administration officials have responded to criticism regarding the safety and maintenance of the provincial road network, which spans 1,619 km. The administration defended its actions against minority council members, characterizing the criticism as political maneuvering ahead of upcoming elections.
Officials highlighted significant financial challenges, noting that the Meloni government has reportedly cut approximately 70% of resources allocated for provincial road maintenance for the 2025-2028 period. Additionally, the administration pointed to a lack of concrete responses regarding 130 million euros in damages caused to transport infrastructure by severe weather in April. The administration emphasized that while the province is working to address critical issues and prevent accidents before winter, adequate funding from higher government levels is essential for safe and efficient connections.
