Italian publishing and library sectors address innovation and copyright

Recent industry conferences in Italy have highlighted significant shifts and challenges within the publishing and library sectors. At an event organized by the Associazione Italiana Editori (AIE), President Innocenzo Cipolletta addressed the need for academic publishing to proactively manage transitions rather than merely reacting to them. Cipolletta noted that digital piracy, changing study habits, and the superficial use of artificial intelligence are currently diminishing the impact of academic publishing.

Simultaneously, the Federazione Unitaria Italiana Scrittori (FUIS) and Federintermedia have launched a major research initiative titled ‘Reading in Libraries 2024 and 2025’. Directed by Professor Giovanni Solimine of the Fondazione Bellonci, the study surveyed 7,000 libraries and 101 consortia, recording approximately 20 million loans for both 2024 and 2025.

The goal of this research is to identify specific authors and titles to facilitate a system of analytical distribution for intellectual property royalties. This initiative aims to establish a system of reciprocity for Italian authors in European and international libraries, a level of detailed tracking that the organizers claim is unprecedented among the 37 countries with active library lending laws.
