Italian Region Marche allocates €330,000 to strengthen transplant network

The Marche regional council approved €330,000 for 2026 to enhance its organ transplant and donation network, fund staff training and promote a culture of donation among young people. The funding follows a previous €300,000 allocation and aims to improve hospital coordination, increase organ, cornea and bone tissue donations, and support surgical teams. In 2025 the region reported 52 liver transplants, 32 kidney transplants, two living‑donor procedures and one combined liver‑kidney transplant, while waiting‑list times for liver transplants averaged 0.6 years versus the national 1.6‑year average. Health assessor Paolo Calcinaro emphasized the need to keep improving the system.

In Sicily, a 60‑year‑old man donated his corneas at Hospital Basso‑Ragusa in Militello. The procedure was coordinated by the hospital’s intensive‑care team and the corneas were sent to the Veneto Eye Bank for microbiological and quality checks. Director Giovanni Francesco Di Fede of the ASP Catania praised the donor family and highlighted the hospital’s focus on safety and quality throughout the process.
