Italian regional fairs promote agrifood biodiversity and livestock

Regional agricultural events in Italy are focusing on livestock protection and genetic biodiversity. In Ragusa, the 51st Mediterranean Agrifood Fair recently concluded, highlighting the Sicilian livestock supply chain. The event featured indigenous breeds, including the Ragusan donkey and local cattle, alongside regional food products like provola ragusana. The Sicilian Zootecnic Institute participated to emphasize its role in ensuring food safety through laboratory testing of meat and milk.

In Puglia, the third edition of the Puglia Biodiversity Fair is scheduled for October 2026 in Locorotondo. The event aims to promote regional agricultural genetic heritage through scientific research, training, and collaboration between institutions and farmers. Officials emphasized that biodiversity serves as a strategic driver for development, linking field work with academic training to protect local varieties.
