Italian regions advance assisted‑suicide legislation under 'Liberi Subito' campaign

In Calabria, regional councilor Elisa Scutellà, leader of the Five Star Movement in the regional council, announced full institutional support for the "Liberi Subito Calabria" drive of the Luca Coscioni Association. She cited the Constitutional Court’s recognition of the right to a dignified death and outlined a proposal to create multidisciplinary medical commissions in every regional health authority to assess eligibility and procedure timing.

In Lombardy, the campaign’s national coordinator Marco Cappato opened a signature‑collection effort in Monza, aiming to gather at least 5,000 valid signatures by 30 September 2026 to file a regional assisted‑suicide bill in the Lombardy council. Cappato warned that the absence of a specific regional law creates uneven access to the Court‑mandated procedures, noting that only 17 Italians have accessed assisted death since 2019. He referenced similar initiatives in Tuscany, Sardinia and other regions, urging broader legislative action across the country.
