Italian Regions Allocate Millions for Drones, Cameras and AI to Strengthen Public Safety

Regional governments in Italy are committing significant funds to upgrade security infrastructure. Lazio has launched the Lazio Sentinel 2030 project with €2 million for AI‑based tools for local police. Marche introduced the "Marche Sicure" initiative to bolster territorial safety, while Lombardy has earmarked €15.8 million for local police equipment and an additional €4.2 million for smart‑operation projects. Piedmont allocated €2.3 million to its urban security pact, and Calabria is investing in video surveillance, drones, lighting and police support. Veneto pledged to cover up to 70 % of municipal costs for cameras, interoperable systems and new radio gear. The Interior Ministry’s sub‑secretary, Nicola Molteni, announced the hiring of 3 000 new police officers, including over 180 in Lombardy, highlighting the coordinated effort between regions and the state.

Officials stress that while regions can fund and equip local forces, overall public‑order authority remains with the state. The initiatives aim to counter rising incidents of violence, youth deviance and organized aggression, offering a technologically enhanced police presence across urban areas.
