Italian regions and unions defend school inclusion against student quotas
Several Italian regions, including Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Sardinia, Puglia, Umbria, and Campania, have signed the ‘Manifesto for Inclusion’. This move aims to promote an open and participatory educational system in response to a decree proposing a 30% cap on foreign students in classrooms.
Regional education officials stated that schools should serve as primary sites for integration and citizenship rather than places that create new inequalities. They emphasized that the Italian Constitution mandates that school be open to all and called for increased investment in education rather than discriminatory measures.
In a separate mobilization, the CGIL and FLC CGIL unions have called on school communities in Taranto to display banners promoting inclusion and constitutional values. This protest follows incidents in Genoa and Pinerolo where authorities removed banners related to inclusion and constitutional rights. The unions are advocating for both ideological openness and increased financial resources for public schools.
