Italian Regions Approve Green Roofs and Urban Green Regulations

The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional council approved an agenda to incorporate green roofs and vegetated walls into new construction and major maintenance projects for public buildings. The measure, presented by the Forza Italia group and backed by councillors Andrea Cabibbo, Roberto Novelli and Michele Lobianco, seeks to lower surface temperatures, cut energy use, improve air quality and enhance acoustic insulation in schools, hospitals, sports facilities and administrative offices. A specific financial allocation will support the interventions.

In the southern city of Potenza, the municipal council passed a new Urban Green Regulation updating a 2004 framework. Environment Assessore Michele Beneventi highlighted that the rule treats urban greenery as essential ecological infrastructure, helping to mitigate heat waves, improve air quality and address local hydro‑geological risks. The regulation introduces clearer management duties, incentives for citizen adoption of public green spaces, and a sanctions system for neglect of private and public vegetation, with fines earmarked for further green projects.
