Italian regions clash over data‑center expansion and its environmental toll

In the Altomilanese area of Lombardy and in Liguria, left‑wing local groups, environmental NGOs and citizens are mobilising against a rapid increase of data‑center projects. Advocates warn that new facilities will consume large amounts of water and energy, raise local temperatures and threaten agricultural land. AVS regional councillor Onorio Rosati criticised the regional law as “late, timid and written by sector lobbies”, noting that it permits the use of free and agricultural soil without adequate safeguards.

The critique extends to Liguria, described as a “silent robbery of land, water and energy” by commentators, who argue that the promised high‑tech development often leaves the environmental and social costs to the public while profits accrue to private operators. Both regions are calling for stronger urban‑planning and environmental protections before further data‑center installations proceed.
