Italian regions increase incentives and exemptions to fight African swine fever

The Province of Cuneo approved a new incentive scheme on 27 July to boost wild‑boar culling and contain African swine fever (ASF). Compensation for culling adult female boars was raised to €90 per day in high‑risk zones, with collective actions paid up to €270 per day when multiple females are removed. The measures differentiate payments across zones defined by Ordinance n. 4/2026, reflecting varying epidemiological risk.

In Tuscany, the regional administration, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Forests (MASAF) and the Cinta Senese DOP consortium, introduced temporary derogations to the DOP regulations. The changes allow producers to slaughter and house pigs outside the usual designated areas for up to 12 months, facilitating compliance with biosafety protocols without losing the DOP certification. Regional agriculture assessor Leonardo Marras said the disease “represents a serious threat to both farms and the cultural heritage of the region,” while consortium president Nicolò Savigni called the derogations “a fundamental result to guarantee continuity for producers.”
