Italian regions present automotive industry proposals to EU institutions

Italian regions with significant automotive manufacturing sectors conducted an institutional mission to Brussels to present a joint proposal to European Union institutions. The delegation met with high-level officials, including European Commission Vice President Raffaele Fitto and European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, to discuss the future of the automotive supply chain.

The regions, including Abruzzo, Basilicata, Campania, Lazio, Lombardy, Molise, Piedmont, Puglia, Emilia-Romagna, Tuscany, Umbria, and Veneto, submitted a document emphasizing the strategic importance of the sector for European industry, employment, and innovation. A central demand of the proposal is the principle of ‘technological neutrality,’ arguing that the transition to sustainable mobility should not rely on a single technological solution but should remain open to all technologies capable of reducing emissions.

Representatives also called for a more stable European industrial policy to protect competitiveness, investments, and production capacity. They requested increased support for innovation, digitalization, and industrial reconversion, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and the component manufacturing sector. The mission highlighted concerns regarding the impact of the transition on local territories and the need for an equitable European framework to prevent industrial desertification.
