Italian research: cleaning home and bi‑monthly breaks lower post‑vacation stress
Psychological studies linked household clutter to higher cortisol levels and reported that tidying a home before returning from holiday can cut perceived post‑vacation stress by up to 40%. A separate clinical investigation published in the National Library of Medicine found that the wellbeing boost from a vacation typically lasts only about eight days. Researchers Elvaraj Giridharane and Bhuvana Pandivan concluded that to sustain mental health, workers should schedule a short break roughly every two months. Practical advice includes clearing visible surfaces, freshening the bedroom, and cleaning the kitchen before leaving for a trip.
The findings, based on a sample of 54 participants, support earlier commentary from psychiatrist Giancarlo Dimaggio, who emphasizes that brief, guilt‑free pauses – not necessarily exotic getaways – can prevent fatigue, anxiety and burnout.
