Italian research links daily steps and dog companionship to weight‑loss maintenance

A Rover.com survey of Italian dog owners found that 59% consider their pet the main motivator for daily physical activity. Owners reported an average increase of over 7,000 steps per day and up to two additional hours of movement each week after getting a dog, with many engaging in walking, power‑walking, trekking, running and canicross. The study also noted that 49% of respondents said a new puppy boosted their activity levels, and 42% were prompted to go out by a pleading look or bark.

Separately, researchers from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore) presented findings at the European Obesity Congress 2026 showing that maintaining approximately 8,500 steps per day helps prevent weight regain after dieting. The study, coordinated by Professor Marwan El Ghoch, highlighted daily walking as a key strategy for long‑term obesity management.

Together, the surveys underscore the importance of regular walking—whether prompted by a pet or by deliberate step targets—in supporting weight maintenance and overall health in Italy.
