Italian researchers link gut health to chronic and neurological diseases
New research from Italian institutions highlights the critical link between intestinal health and long-term neurological and chronic diseases. A study led by Cristina Lanni at the University of Pavia, published in Pharmacological Research, suggests that intestinal inflammation can leave lasting alterations in the brain even after intestinal symptoms have subsided. This process may involve the glymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing waste from the central nervous system.
Complementary findings from researchers at the Gemelli University Hospital and the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, published in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, suggest that the gut microbiota can act as a predictive diagnostic tool. The researchers argue that changes in the microbiota can anticipate the onset of chronic diseases years before symptoms appear through a process called ‘metainflammation.’ This silent inflammatory state progressively erodes the immune system, metabolism, and nervous system. The scientists identified ultra-processed foods and industrial additives as primary drivers in the destruction of the human biological ecosystem.
