Italian rice acreage shifts and Champagne yield cut signal climate, market pressures

In Italy, total rice‑cultivated area remains roughly level at about 233,500 ha, but the composition of varieties is changing. The area of the Tondi type rose from 56,800 to 77,500 ha, while the Medi variety fell by roughly 48 %. Varieties aimed at the domestic market gained ground as prices stayed acceptable despite a difficult harvest season. Producers in Lombardy report serious water shortages, blaming canal‑management bodies for limited irrigation, which may affect yields more than planted surface.

In the Champagne region of France, the Comité Champagne announced that the commercialisable yield for the 2026 vintage will be limited to 8,800 kg per hectare. This is the fourth consecutive reduction, following 11,400 kg/ha in 2023, 10,000 kg/ha in 2024 and 9,000 kg/ha in 2025. The cut aims to align production with demand, manage stocks and preserve the appellation’s value amid a climate‑challenged year featuring frost, heat spikes and late‑season drought, while domestic consumption stays weak but exports rose 1.2 % to 107.1 million bottles.
