Italian Right Splits Over General Roberto Vannacci's Influence

Pier Luigi Bersani, former leader of the Democratic Party, used a La7 interview to harshly rebuke General Roberto Vannacci, accusing him of reducing homosexuality to a "taste" and urging him to look up the word "finocchi" in the dictionary. Bersani also warned Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni about the growing far‑right narrative linked to Vannacci.

Meanwhile, Italy’s Lega is divided on how to contain Vannacci’s rising appeal. Party secretary Matteo Salvini rejected a federal re‑organisation of the party proposed by Veneto governor Luca Zaia and mediated by Roberto Calderoli, leaving the Lega split over strategy ahead of upcoming elections and the stability of the centre‑right coalition.
