Italian savers face inflation risks and rising living costs
Italian households face significant financial pressures due to inflation and rising living costs. An investigation by Altroconsumo suggests that families of four could potentially save up to 3,790 euros annually by optimizing supermarket choices, such as utilizing discount stores, comparing prices per unit, and leveraging loyalty programs.
Simultaneously, inflation continues to erode the value of liquid assets. Data from the Bank of Italy shows that Italian families hold approximately 1,163 billion euros in current accounts. With inflation exceeding 3%, leaving 10,000 euros in a bank account can result in a loss of 320 euros in purchasing power per year. This trend is compounded by low financial literacy rates in Italy; an OECD study indicates that only 9% of fifteen-year-old students possess basic knowledge regarding interest rates.
To address public debt and offer alternatives to stagnant savings, the Ministry of Economy and Finance is launching two five-year government bonds for retail investors: Btp Valore, which offers increasing quarterly coupons up to a maximum yield of 4.70% in the fifth year, and Btp Valore Insieme.
