Italy schools face teacher delays and heatwave disruptions
Italian schools face various challenges as the new academic year begins, ranging from administrative delays to environmental and structural concerns. In the Rimini, Forlì, and Cesena areas, the UIL Scuola union has raised alarms regarding significant delays in assigning substitute teachers, which threatens educational continuity.
Extreme weather is also impacting school schedules. In San Lucido, the mayor postponed school openings to September 21 due to an exceptional heatwave and a lack of adequate air conditioning in older buildings. Similarly, in Polistena, authorities implemented reduced hours during the first week of school to protect students from high temperatures.
Structural safety remains a critical issue. In Andria, the Carlo Troya high school was briefly declared unusable due to seismic vulnerability before being cleared for reopening, a rapid turnaround that has drawn scrutiny from local leadership. Conversely, Sennori has successfully completed safety upgrades on school floors, and Pescara is progressing with renovations at the Michetti school.
Local administrations are also focusing on logistical support. Venafro and Montoro have confirmed the availability of transport and canteen services, while Catania is reopening its nurseries with over 800 spots. In Monza, the AC Monza football club continues its tradition of providing school supplies to primary students.
