Italy outlines teacher hiring and school‑director mobility for 2026‑27

The Ministry of Education and school unions met to announce the staffing plan for the 2026‑27 school year. The contingent for permanent teacher appointments is expected to be just under 50,000 positions, with details to follow in a decree. The process will draw half of the seats from the Graduatorie ad Esaurimento (GaE) and the other half from competition lists, including those created under the PNRR funding programmes.

The SIDI platform for school‑director mobility opened on 26 June 2026, with a submission deadline of 1 July. Unions warned that the five‑day window – which includes a weekend – is insufficient without the publication of school‑complexity classifications, a key factor for directors’ career decisions.

In the Veneto region, the public employment service published the list of available director posts, with assignments to be finalized by mid‑July and new appointments taking effect from 1 September 2026. Separate from permanent hires, up to 150,000 substitute teaching positions will be allocated through an algorithm‑based preference system.
