Italian schools face infrastructure shortages for physical education
Educational facilities in Italy are facing significant challenges regarding physical education spaces. In Mascalucia, over 1,500 students at the Concetto Marchesi complex are unable to conduct motor science lessons due to the absence of suitable facilities. Deputy Anthony Barbagallo has filed an urgent inquiry with Minister Valditara, questioning why a gymnasium was excluded from the original construction project for the new school building despite being initially planned.
In Sulmona, the Serafini school continues to struggle with a closed gymnasium. Although 2 million euros were spent on seismic consolidation works starting in 2021, the project did not include necessary interventions for the ground-floor gym. The space has since been repurposed as a storage area for furniture and old computers. The municipality is now seeking approximately 700,000 euros to reactivate the space, potentially through an 'eight per thousand' fund and a state grant application, as students are currently forced to use public gardens or other distant facilities for physical activity.
