Italian scientists convene to draft polar research White Paper
The First National Polar Conference has concluded in Rome, marking the first time the Italian scientific community dedicated to polar regions has met to discuss research advancements and future priorities. Coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR) in collaboration with ENEA, INGV, and OGS, the event brought together over 200 participants and 15 senior coordinators.
The conference aims to produce a strategic White Paper to guide future Italian national policies regarding the Arctic, Antarctica, and the Third Pole (the Himalayas, Karakorum, and the Tibetan Plateau). This document is intended to provide concrete tools for political decision-making and climate adaptation strategies by understanding the processes governing global climate dynamics.
Minister of University and Research Anna Maria Bernini emphasized the importance of such research, noting how small traces in ice can reveal atmospheric data from hundreds of thousands of years ago, transforming scientific traces into actionable knowledge.
