Respiratory health initiatives focus on prevention and diagnosis in Italy
In anticipation of World Lung Day on September 25, various Italian medical and political initiatives are highlighting the importance of respiratory health and early diagnosis. A conference organized by Senator Marco Scurria at the Italian Senate addressed the challenges of respiratory diseases, noting that Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) affects approximately 3.5 million people in Italy, though clinical data suggests significant underdiagnosis.
Medical professionals emphasized that respiratory health is a lifelong process, beginning in the womb and continuing through childhood. Experts noted that environmental factors and early infections can impact lung function into adulthood.
Regional medical efforts are also underway, including an epidemiological study in Verona led by the IRCCS Sacro Cuore Don Calabria to monitor asthma and COPD prevalence. Additionally, the Ast Picena department has invested approximately 165,000 euros in new diagnostic equipment, such as advanced spirometers and Ebus endoscopes, to improve the detection of lung diseases and tumors. In Ferrara, the Cona Hospital is utilizing robotic-assisted thoracic surgery to treat lung and pleural pathologies through minimally invasive techniques.
