Italian Senate reviews proposal for protected “Gelato di tradizione italiana” label

Italian gelato makers' organisations CNA, Confartigianato and Conpait have submitted a proposal to create a regulated denomination called “Gelato di tradizione italiana”. The draft discipline defines specific ingredients, preparation methods and the use of fresh, preferably national, raw materials, distinguishing the product from frozen industrial desserts. The initiative aims to protect and promote the sector’s 9,345 gelateria laboratories, including 6,126 artisan operators, and to give consumers clearer information about quality and origin.

The proposal was presented to Senate Industry Commission president Luca De Carlo and Senator Giorgio Salvitti, who indicated interest and willingness to explore the most effective path for introducing the recognition into Italian law. The next step will be a formal legislative process to adopt the denomination.
