Italian small towns' summer events strain municipal budgets

Across Italy's small municipalities, summer evenings are filled with staged events featuring television personalities, influencers and other celebrities. The practice, dubbed “politica della piazza piena,” aims to draw attention and boost the image of local authorities, but often relies on costly appearance fees and production expenses. While organizers claim the gatherings attract tourists and boost local bars and restaurants, most attendees are residents from nearby towns, turning the spending into a simple shift of local consumption rather than generating new revenue. Some municipalities have experimented with models that deliver measurable, lasting benefits, yet many events remain short‑lived and leave little financial legacy for the community.
