Italian SMEs face industrial conversion and credit challenges
Italian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are facing significant structural and economic challenges, according to recent reports from CNEL and Confapi. A CNEL report highlights the urgent need for industrial conversion and diversification within the automotive supply chain, emphasizing that small businesses must seek aggregation and networks to remain competitive in a globalized market.
Data from the Confapi 2026 Conjunctural Report, based on a sample of 2,000 companies, reveals a climate of extreme caution. Alberto Meschieri, President of Confapi Emilia, noted that market uncertainty is the primary obstacle to development. The report finds that 51.7% of companies have no multi-year growth plans, and 66.5% are avoiding new bank credit due to costs and rigidity. While 43.8% of firms plan to invest in Artificial Intelligence, overall investment remains cautious amid geopolitical instability.
