Società Italiana di Neurologia holds 56th Congress in Florence

The 56th Congress of the Italian Society of Neurology (Sin) is taking place in Florence, bringing together over 2,700 professionals to discuss the future of neurological care. The event focuses on advancements in diagnosis, prevention, and treatment for neurodegenerative diseases.

Experts highlighted the potential of emerging therapies, including gene therapy, RNA-based treatments, genetic editing, and Car-T cell technology. Nicola De Stefano, the elected president of Sin, noted that while many of these approaches are still in experimental phases, they offer the possibility of intervening directly on the biological mechanisms of diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), dementia, and multiple sclerosis.

Additionally, the congress addressed the importance of precision neurology through the use of biomarkers. Alessandro Padovani emphasized how biomarkers are improving the ability to monitor inflammatory states and neurodegenerative processes in conditions like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and multiple sclerosis. The event also features the first 'Stati Generali' of neurological disease associations to foster dialogue between clinicians and patients.
