Italian Space Agency's ETNA Rover Completes Successful Mt. Etna Test for Lunar Missions

The Italian Space Agency (ASI) announced that the ETNA rover (Exploration Technology for Navigation & Autonomy) has finished a multi‑week test campaign on the slopes of Mount Etna. The volcanic terrain was chosen to mimic the rough, loosely compacted surfaces expected at the Moon’s south‑pole region.

During the trials the vehicle demonstrated autonomous navigation, active‑suspension mobility and independent operation without continuous ground control. The program, coordinated and funded by ASI and led by Thales Alenia Space Italia with partners Leonardo, IIT, ALTEC, the Politecnico di Torino and Volta Structural Energy, validated technologies intended for upcoming lunar exploration missions.

Successful performance on Etna’s lava flows and steep gradients is a key step toward deploying similar rovers on future lunar missions, where communication delays will require on‑board decision‑making and robust locomotion.
