Italy's space sector accelerates with satellite data, AI and PNRR funding

At a parliamentary event in Rome titled “Le tecnologie dello spazio e il governo del territorio”, senior executives of Italy’s space industry outlined the country’s growing capabilities.

Roberto Tartaglia Polcini, CEO of MapSat and president of GeneGis, said the convergence of recent trends – expanding Earth‑observation satellite constellations and the rollout of artificial‑intelligence tools – creates a “propitious moment” for the sector. He noted that the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the Iride project have financed a leap in Italy’s space ranking, but stressed the need to maintain the “highway” of data, promote market rules, and train operators.

Salvatore Cincotti, founder and president of GeneGis and also president of MapSat, echoed the message, highlighting how satellite data are now accessible via smartphones and can support real‑time territorial management. He called for greater European autonomy in space and deeper collaboration with partners such as the United States, warning that Italy’s strategic role in the European arena depends on continued investment and the diffusion of these services.
