Italian spirits sector shows resilience amid global consumption slowdown
The Italian spirits and liqueurs sector is navigating a global slowdown in consumption and trade. According to data from Assodistil, Nomisma, and Format Research, Italian spirits exports reached 1.7 billion euros in 2025. While this represents a 5% decrease compared to 2024, it remains 33.7% higher than 2019 levels, indicating a stronger international presence than in the pre-pandemic era.
Italy's performance has outpaced several major competitors during this market contraction. While Italian exports dipped, France and the United States both saw an 11% decline, and Mexico experienced a 17% drop. Industry experts from Assodistil suggest that Italy's resilience is tied to product diversification, specifically focusing on mixology, ready-to-drink products, and new consumer habits.
Domestically, the Italian market is seeing a shift toward more selective consumption. Spirits consumption in Italy fell to approximately 125 million liters in 2025, a 10% decrease from 2019. This trend reflects both economic prudence among households and a cultural shift toward higher quality and moderation.
