Italian Sports Minister Andrea Abodi Calls for FIGC Reforms After World Cup Setback

Minister for Sport and Youth Andrea Abodi said he remains skeptical that merely changing the FIGC president will solve the federation’s problems. He stressed that reforms must also reshape the council, introduce an independent financial oversight commission and ensure sport‑justice bodies are truly independent.

Abodi outlined two priority areas: restructuring league calendars and the professional system to better align domestic and international matches, and creating mechanisms that prevent vetoes on overall development. He indicated a reform package would be presented to CONI by June, covering federal prosecutions and broader governance.

The minister also warned that Italy’s failure to qualify for the World Cup for a third time is unacceptable, calling for a “shock of consciousness” centered on youth development, talent scouting and coaching. He mentioned Pep Guardiola as a possible future national team coach and stressed that improving the talent pipeline, not merely importing players, is essential for future success.
