Italian sports reports highlight financial fragility and regional activity gaps
New reports released in Italy highlight the contrasting economic and social landscapes of the nation's sports sector. The 2026 Annual Report from the Independent Commission for the Verification of Economic and Financial Equilibrium of Professional Sports Clubs indicates financial fragility within Italian professional sports. Specifically, the analysis of 97 balance sheets across football and basketball reveals that four Serie A clubs are in a state of fragility, while Serie C remains unstable.
Simultaneously, the 2026 Report “Gli italiani, le città e lo sport” by the Permanent Observatory on Sport shows that while sports participation is growing—with 37.5% of Italians over age three practicing at least one sport—significant disparities remain. There is a 16-percentage-point gap in activity levels between the North-east (43.9%) and the South/Islands (27.9%). The report also notes challenges regarding infrastructure, stating that 44% of known sports facilities date back to the 1970s or 1980s, and over 20% are not accessible to people with disabilities.
