Italian Stem Cell Research Shows Fasting Boosts Regeneration and Space Alters Cell Reactivity

Recent studies highlight two distinct advances in stem cell biology conducted by Italian researchers. A collaboration that includes the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, published in *Nature*, found that intermittent fasting and the subsequent re‑feeding phase markedly enhance intestinal stem‑cell regeneration. The work identified metabolic shifts involving mTORC1, polyamines and the gut microbe *Akkermansia muciniphila*, while also noting a potential rise in precancerous mutation risk.

Separately, Salvatore Di Somma of the University of Rome La Sapienza reported that stem cells harvested from astronauts exhibit heightened reactivity in microgravity. The altered behavior suggests new avenues for preventive medicine, potentially enabling earlier detection and treatment of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart attacks.
