Italian Students Widely Use Chatbots to Prepare for 2026 Maturità Exams

A survey of students preparing for the 2026 Italian Maturità shows that 74% rely on generative AI chatbots for study. Of these, 47% use a chatbot daily and 27% use them intermittently. When asked about the written exam, 9% say they would use AI during the test and 11% are undecided, despite a strict ban on personal electronic devices in the exam hall.

The data also reveal a shift in study habits: traditional group study sessions are being replaced by individual AI‑assisted review. Among frequent users, 61% employ chatbots for explanations and summaries, while 38% let them generate complete answers for exercises. Educators warn that the growing dependence on AI could affect cognitive development and exam integrity, prompting calls for clearer guidelines on permissible AI use in school assessments.
