Italian Submarine Romeo Romei Completes 98-Day Atlantic Mission

The Italian Navy’s newest Todaro‑class submarine, Romeo Romei (S529), finished a 98‑day operational deployment that took it from its home port of Taranto to the Atlantic and back. Departing on 13 April, the vessel traversed the western Mediterranean and the Atlantic, completing two submerged passages of the Strait of Gibraltar and logging more than 100 000 miles since entering service.

During the cruise the submarine made port calls in Cartagena, Spain, and Brest, France, where it worked with allied navies to enhance interoperability. The mission marks the return of Italy’s submarine component to the Atlantic for the first time in over a decade, reinforcing the country’s ability to project credible under‑sea presence and to protect strategic maritime routes.

Italian officials highlighted the operation’s technical complexity and the crew’s professionalism, noting that the deployment demonstrates the navy’s capacity to sustain long‑range missions in partnership with NATO partners.
