Italian Supreme Court confirms life sentences in Saman Abbas murder case

Italy's Supreme Court (Cassazione) has issued a final ruling confirming the life sentences for the murder of Saman Abbas, an 18-year-old Pakistani woman. The court rejected appeals from the defendants, ruling that the killing was a premeditated act intended to punish the victim for seeking a life different from her family's social norms.

The sentences, originally handed down by the Bologna Court of Appeal, include life imprisonment for Abbas's parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, and her cousins, Noman Ul Haq and Ijaz Ikram. They were convicted of murder and the suppression of a corpse. Additionally, the court confirmed a 22-year prison sentence for her uncle, Danish Hasnain.

Saman Abbas was killed in Novellara, Reggio Emilia, between April 30 and May 1, 2021. Her body was discovered in a shallow grave near her family home approximately 18 months later, in November 2022.
