Italian Supreme Court rules phone makers must warn of radiation risks

The Italian Supreme Court (Corte di Cassazione) has ruled that mobile phone manufacturers must clearly inform users about the potential risks associated with radiofrequency exposure. In a decision regarding a lawsuit against Apple Distribution International, the Court established that merely complying with technical standards, such as Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) limits, is insufficient to absolve companies of responsibility.

The ruling emphasizes the duty to warn consumers, even in the absence of definitive proof regarding the toxicity of electromagnetic waves. The case, which was sent back to the Court of Appeal in Bologna, originated from a user's claim that a lack of clear information prevented her from adopting safer usage habits, such as using hands-free devices or limiting proximity to the head.
