Italian Teachers' Union Urges Technical Institute Reform and Defends Teacher Workload

The National Coordination of Teachers of Human Rights (CNDDU) welcomed a recent meeting at the Ministry of Education that confirmed many of its proposals for revising the reform of technical institutes. The union highlighted suggested measures such as rebalancing teaching hours, strengthening the A‑46 teaching category, introducing subjects on legal and economic education, and allowing more flexible staffing without adding public costs. It warned that inadequate planning could lead to staff over‑numbers, disrupt school autonomy and threaten the stability of institutions.

Separately, the CNDDU challenged the popular view that teachers enjoy a three‑month vacation, describing it as a misleading simplification. It stressed that teachers’ duties extend beyond classroom lessons to include curriculum design, assessment, collaboration with families, and addressing educational inequalities, psychosocial issues and digital challenges. The union also pointed out that Italian teachers earn less than many European counterparts despite growing responsibilities, urging a serious debate on the strategic role of educators for the country's future.
