Italian teen murder trial highlights AI‑generated chat and phone evidence

On 26 June the Naples Court of Assizes examined the mobile phone of 14‑year‑old Martina Carbonaro as part of the murder trial against her former boyfriend, Alessio Tucci. Prosecutors presented more than 168 000 messages, audio files and videos retrieved from the device, including a query typed by Carbonaro to ChatGPT asking why she felt afraid to hand the phone over. The digital trail shows a pattern of threats, an alleged slap that broke the teen’s glasses, and subsequent apologies from Carbonaro.

Key excerpts introduced in court include Tucci’s threatening remark “Il karma esiste, devi morire per amore” and Carbonaro’s repeated statement “mi fai paura.” The phone thus served as a dual record of the violence suffered and the victim’s emotional response, while the AI interaction underscored the role of conversational tools in contemporary investigations.
