Italy introduces toll‑refund for German motorists heading to Gardasee
Effective 1 June 2026 Italy will reimburse toll fees to drivers who are delayed by construction‑related traffic on its highways. The refund applies when a delay exceeds specific thresholds – at least one minute on routes up to 30 km, ten minutes on 30‑50 km, or fifteen minutes on over 50 km – and the compensation scales with the length of the delay (50 % for 60‑119 min, 75 % for 120‑179 min, and a full refund for 180 min or more). The scheme is available to all motorists, including German tourists travelling to the Gardasee region, but foreign drivers must register in the dedicated app and provide an Italian tax identification number. The Italian consumer‑protection association has expressed doubts about the smooth operation of the new system.
