Italian tomato sauce market sees organic growth and quality testing
The Italian food company Petti, through its Italian Food plant, has reported record volumes for processed organic tomatoes. Despite structural challenges in the 2026 industrial tomato campaign—including climate anomalies and rising energy and raw material costs—the company maintained production yields and seasonal employment through local supply chain planning.
Petti is expanding its product range to include innovative items such as ‘Il Delicato’ extra-fine Tuscan tomato passata and new sugar-free datterini and ciliegini ready-made sauces in 250g bottles designed to reduce waste.
In a separate assessment of the market, a study by Salvagente analyzed 16 tomato passata products made with Italian raw materials. The testing evaluated pesticide residues and Brix levels (concentration). While no products exceeded legal limits for pesticide residues, brands such as Eurospin Delizie del Sole and Selex Passata Classica received the lowest scores in the study due to detected pesticide residues. The study noted that lower scores do not imply the products are illegal or unsafe for consumption.
