Italian towns advance church reconstruction after earthquakes

In Concordia, Italy, the Diocese of Carpi and the municipal government held a public meeting to reaffirm a €15.7 million commitment to rebuild churches damaged by the 2012 quake. Architect Sandra Losi, parish priest Don Andrea Kielbasa, engineer Francesco Gelmuzzi and other officials outlined the complex restoration work for the churches of Concordia, Fossa, Santa Caterina and San Giovanni, stressing that no ecclesiastical building will be left behind.

On the island of Ischia, the churches of Sant’Antonio da Padova in Casamicciola Terme and San Francesco d’Assisi in Forio were reopened after consolidation and restoration following the 2017 earthquake. The ceremonies were attended by extraordinary reconstruction commissioner Marcello Feola, Bishop Carlo Villano, mayor Giosi Ferrandino and local residents, who highlighted the symbolic importance of returning these historic worship sites to the community.

Both events illustrate ongoing efforts to restore religious heritage and support displaced residents across the affected Italian regions.
