Italian towns confront surge in ATM robberies, from protest in Cerignola to fraud attempt in Turin

On 18 June, a flash‑mob organised by lawyer Nicola Famiglietti gathered citizens in Cerignola’s Piazza Duomo to denounce a spate of ATM assaults, including a recent attack on a Unicredit branch. Participants used a megaphone and a speaker‑corner, urging a civic response and describing the protest as a way to “riprendere gli spazi della città”.

Two days earlier, in Turin, police responded to an attempted fraud at a Banca Sella ATM on Via Bologna. A metal fork had been inserted into the cash‑dispensing slot, preventing the withdrawal of money. Officers blocked the machine, opened an investigation and sought CCTV footage to identify the perpetrators.
